Just when many were starting to write off the defending champion and top seed Jeremy Miller, he put in an awesome display in his semi-final match against Leyland Leacock on Monday evening to setup a dream final against favorite Anthony Downes. Following an ordinary performance in the previous tournament where he lost to Ezra Sue-Ho, Miller showed that he means business this time around by overpowering veteran Leacock 6-0 6-2 in a match lasting just over an hour.
Miller, who shutdown all the challenges posed by Leacock, who stretched him to three sets last year with his powerful ground strokes, is on course for three titles as he has already secured the Mixed Doubles teaming up with Shelly Ramdyhan and the Men’s Doubles title which he won with partner Jason Andrews.
His matchup against fellow 19 year-old college player Downes will be a fitting end to a tournament which has produced high quality tennis and record crowds.
Downes, en route to the final took care of second seed Ezra Sue-Ho 6-4 6-2 in his semi-final.
He also stopped former champion Phillip Squires in the quarters; his level of play has been impressive to date setting up a dream final this evening against Miller. The first ball will be served at 18:00hrs this evening.
