The Guyana Amateur Boxing Association team to the Pan Am qualifying box off scheduled for Panama has been trimmed to just three from the original eight persons due to lack of funding.
GABA President Steve Ninvalle met the boxers and gave the news yesterday. He also made the disclosure to Kaieteur Sport. Ninvalle said Terrence Poole will double in functions as Manager/Coach, while the two boxers chosen are Steffon Gouveia (Lightweight) and Bert Braithwaite (Jnr Welterweight).
It is understood that GABA officials met and were contemplating calling off the trip but a few sponsors chipped in including Digicel to ensure Guyana is represented. Among the sponsors offering support were the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport, Maurice Gajadar of Caribbean International Distributors Inc., RRT, Nexus Machinery, the GOA and Seon Bristol. Ninvalle expressed heartfelt gratitude to the sponsors noting the assistance from Digicel, which was facilitated by Gavin Hope and CEO Gregory Dean.
Ninvalle and Vice President Eustace Cuffy, who was due to travel with the team, met and had pep talks with the entire squad.
Ninvalle told them it was unfortunate the full team was not going but explained the circumstances and tough choices made, which the boxers understood. He charged the pair going to make the best of the opportunity not only form themselves but for their fellow boxers and more importantly their country. Both men stressed the need for the fighters to be disciplined and of their best behaviour. The trio leaves today for Panama and will return on July 9.
Another team of boxers are due to travel to Venezuela later next month and GABA is hoping that they will be well represented this time around with a full team.
