A post mortem examination performed on the remains of Malissa, and her brother, Miron Torres, has confirmed that they died from drowning.
The post mortem was performed early yesterday morning by Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh. The examination revealed that the two children aged 9 and 5, died as a result of asphyxiation due to drowning.
Immediately after the post mortem the children’s remains were handed over to their relatives. Late yesterday, Malissa and Miron were laid to rest. There was a large turn out by residents of the area who were all very supportive of the family and who assisted in the funeral arrangements.
On Saturday last the children was discovered missing by their mother, Elizabeth Torres. At the time the woman was tending to her ailing four-month-old baby. Initial reports are that the mother was of the opinion that the two children had left the house with their father.
However after checking with her husband the woman realized that the children were not with him. An alarm was raised and a search was launched.
The children’s clothing was found on a dam near a canal some distance from the children’s home. Persons who joined the search party immediately went into the canal and a short time after the bodies were pulled from the canal.
The police were called in and the bodies were removed from the scene. This is the third child to have died in a similar fashion for the Torres family. Some four years ago four-year-old Ken Torres perished in a canal near his parents’ home in Hogg Island.
Mrs. Torres said that at the time she was doing house chores when the child went to the canal to play and fell in without being noticed. Some time later the child’s body was pulled from the canal. The Torres are now left with two children ages four years and four months.
