Residents of Cornelia Ida were thoroughly entertained when the executives of the Guyana Softball League (GSL) staged a tournament where several female teams competed against each other in specially arranged encounters recently.
In the first encounter Rising Star XI, a combination of players from the Cornelia Ida and Leonora, defeated Hubu XI by 18 runs after Adela Graham and Waheeda Rahaman combined to post a solid partnership of 82. The former team eventually ended on 92 – 1 in their 10 overs and then returned to dismiss their opponents for seventy four.
In the second game, Gleneagles X1 made light work of Saint Lawrence, winning by 20 runs after batting first and compiling 74 -7 in 10 overs. Jaswanttie Narine (3-8 from 2 overs) then led the way to dismiss their opponents for 54 in 9.5 overs.
Game three saw Rising Stars XI taking on Monar Institute Combine XI and mauling them by 101 runs.
The former team batted first and made 132-1 in 10 overs with Adela Graham slamming 80 (10×4) and Natoya Elexey with an unbeaten 34 to post an opening partnership of 131 before Graham was run out going for an impossible single.
In reply, Monar were restricted to 31 in 6 overs with Stephanie Shikumar taking the bowling honours, snapping up 3-10 from 2 overs.
Other results are: Hubu XI lost to Gleneagles after the former team made 55 all out and Gleneagles replying with 56-6 in 9.5 overs. Monar Institute Combined then defeated after batting first and scoring 130 -1 in 10 overs.
Sonia O’Selmo (50) and Amanda Singh (56) were the top scorers. The eventual winners then returned to limit Hubu XI to 25 all out. Royal Challengers XI managed to contain Rising Stars XI to 96-2 in 10 overs but failed to eclipse the total, crumbling for 39 all out in 8.5 overs.
Gleneagles defeated Royal Challengers after the latter team out in 9.5 overs was dismissed for 74 in 9.5 overs. Glen Eagles XI then knocked off the required total (76-5) in 7.3 overs.
Monar Institute also won over Royal Challengers XI after the former team chalked up 94-4 in 10 overs before restricting Royal Challengers XI to 43 all out in 9 overs. Saint Lawrence also defeated Hubu XI by 10 runs.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Softball League continues its developmental programme and will stage another female tournament at Helena Mahaica this Sunday with all of the female teams in the Upper East Coast joining with two other teams from the West Demerara in competition.
