Prison officer Orlando Jaundoo, 24, of Lot 1 Content, Mahaicony, was further remanded to prison until July 18 by magistrate Adela Nagamootoo, yesterday.
He once more appeared before her at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court. Jaundoo is charged with aiding and abetting convicted prisoner and former businessman Krisha Paul Doerga to escape from the confines of the New Amsterdam Prison. This happened on Saturday June 4 while he was an officer on duty at the New Amsterdam prison.
Prosecutor Corporal King restated earlier submissions that bail should be refused on the grounds that the accused is a flight risk and if granted bail would not return for his trial. He had already fled the jurisdiction and was captured in Suriname.
Attorney at Law Joe Misir, who appeared for Jaundoo, argued for bail for his client. Misir in his submission stated that the matter is a bailable one, that his client is no flight risk and that he is a victim of circumstances.
He is willing to submit to all conditions set by the court, Misir said. He added that his client has an impeccable character. Misir further submitted that the prosecution is not ready with the file and if not granted bail his client will have to be incarcerated for almost a month before his next court date, with persons whom he use to supervise.
He has tremendous responsibilities at home since he lives with his elderly 84-year-old grandmother and has to take care of the chickens, goats and kitchen garden, the lawyer told the court.
According to Misir, Jaundoo who holds the rank of prison officer in the prison service is a student of the University of Guyana where he is pursuing a course in Social Work.
After the hearing was completed there were some uncertainty and confusion outside the court with Jaundoo’s family stating that they wanted attorney at law Kim Kyte to represent him in the matter. However Jaundoo had contacted Joe Misir to be his attorney.
Doerga, a 52-year-old businessman who was serving a three-year sentence for fraud, left the New Amsterdam Prison with Jaundoo under the pretext of repairing a sewing machine at the Prison Officers Recreational Hall and Sports club across the road from the penitentiary.
However, the two men ended up at Springlands and then in Nickerie, Suriname where Doerga after hiring a taxi tried to slip the Prison officer, by jumping in the vehicle first and telling the driver to drive.
However, Jaundoo was able to slip into the taxi where a scuffle ensued between the two, the Suriname police eventually got involved and the men were captured.
Jaundoo was a Tutor and Literacy Officer at the New Amsterdam Prison. Kaieteur News understands that Doerga, a Surinamese, cannot be extradited because there is no extradition treaty between the two countries
