A young mother is thankful to be alive along with her three children after her reputed husband set the house afire with herself and other family members inside.
Cheryl Kattow, of Friendship, East Bank Demerara, lost all her earthly belonging after her reputed husband of eight years set their house afire some time around 21:30 hour Thursday night.
According to Kattow a while ago she discovered that her reputed husband was having an affair with one of her relatives.
The woman related that recently her relatives returned home and found out about the affair.
“The other day me uncle come out de bush and beat up he wife after he find out about de affair. So he beat up she so now me husband like he believe that I tell the man something.”.
Kattow further related that on Thursday evening her husband went home and began accusing her of ‘selling him out’. Having realized that her husband was under the influence the woman said she decided to hide under the bed as the man began threatening to kill her.
“He go to me cousin and keep asking she way I deh and me cousin just keep saying she ain’t know but all de time I hiding under de bed and he start breaking up the things in the house. Them children was sleeping”.
According to the woman , while she hid under the bed her cousin pleaded with her husband to allow her to take the children out of the house.
“I smelling the kero all the time and me cousin keep begging he fuh carry dem children outside but he just keep cussing and asking fuh me.”.
The woman said that the noise eventually woke up her nine-month-old baby while her 13 year-old son woke up and ran out the house.
“After the baby wake up, me cousin pick her up and me big son run out the house and eventually me husband kick open the door and me cousin run out with them children.”.
Kattow added that it was only after the entire house was filled with smoke and when her husband kicked open a window that she fled the house.
“I had to wait till he make noise again because if I de kick de window he woulda hear so when he kick de door same time I kick de window and jump through.”
The distraught woman said she ran to another relative’s home where she related what had transpired.
“The woman said she stood by and watched her home go up in flames and still wasn’t certain that her children, her cousin and her cousin’s son had made it out the burning house.
The woman said immediately after the house was gutted her husband fled the area as her cousin brought her children to her.
Meanwhile according to a police press statement up to press time yesterday the man was still at large.
Kattow and her three children are currently staying at a relative’s home while they contemplate their next move.
