– cops stake out Botanical Gardens following $300,000 ransom demand
Police are trying to locate an 18-year-old girl who was allegedly kidnapped on Wednesday.
Loretta Persaud, called ‘Stephanie’, of Unity Village, East Coast Demerara, left her home around 09:30 hrs for computer classes in Middle Street, Georgetown. She was last seen in the vicinity of the University of Guyana, where she was reportedly planning to enrol.
Kaieteur News understands that an uncle received a text message on Thursday night from someone demanding $300,000 for his niece’s safe return. The message was sent from Loretta’s mobile phone.
It was only then that relatives informed police of Loretta’s disappearance.
According to a source, the family received several other text messages from the ‘abductors’. One message instructed relatives to drop off the ransom near an East Coast Demerara village. They then sent another text message demanding that the cash be dropped off in the Botanical Gardens.
Police staked out the area but the ‘kidnappers’ failed to show up.
Kaieteur News understands that Loretta, a former St. Joseph’s High student had indicated that she would have sent in an application form to the University of Guyana on the same day she disappeared.
This newspaper understands that some police ranks are somewhat puzzled at the relatively small sum that the ‘kidnappers’ are demanding.
Detectives are said to be looking into the background of some of the teen’s associates but no one has been arrested.
