– Johnson emphatically turns table on Kyle Edghill
By Edison Jefford
An audience of table tennis luminaries were quite sure that they had seen Elishaba Johnson and Kyle Edghill faceoff in a title match before, and as it turned out, they were right, but yesterday it was Johnson who prevailed over the lad who last defeated him.
It was a simple case of Déjà Vu; a battle before fought, but this time a different winner; Johnson ensured that he enforce clinical revenge on Edghill on Day Two of the National Sports Commission and Guyana Table Tennis Association Independence Championships.
Johnson was fierce in his 11-6, 11-3 and 11-8 win in straight sets over Edghill, who had defeated him earlier this year at the Mashramani Championships. The two national Cadet players renewed a rivalry that started with the emergence of Edghill in the sport.
So far, the head-to-head count between Edghill and Johnson is squared at one apiece in the Boys’ Under-13 Category.
In the Girls’ Under-13 Final, Priscilla Greaves showed consistency, winning her second major title 11-5, 11-5 and 11-9 against Nevaeh Clarkston. Greaves had also staked an important claim at the Mashramani tournament earlier this year.
‘Junior Sportswoman of the Year’, and Caribbean U-13 Champion, Chelsea Edghill comfortably won two titles in the U-15 and U-18 Categories before dropping the game in the Women’s draw against Natalie Cummings, summing up an unusual day for the player.
Edghill defeated Greaves 11-6, 11-7, 10-12 and 11-4 in the U-15 competition before sweeping to an 11-6, 11-8 and 11-5 victory over Akeicia Nedd, who is just returning from a knee injury in the U-18 contest. Edghill, who was second to Trenace Lowe at the National Championships, entered the Women’s draw as one of the favourites to win the title.
However, it was clear yesterday that Chelsea, who is Kyle’s sister, will have no easy time getting over a seasoned group of players. Up to Kaieteur Sport press time, the Women’s draw had boiled down to the semi-final stage with Edghill ranked second in her group.
Edghill will play Jody-Ann Blake, while Cummings will face Adele Rusheuvel in the semis of an already entertaining women’s contest on July 4, a date that will also feature the Boys U-18, U-15 and Men’s competition when the Independence tournament continues.
Up to press time last night, competition was ongoing in the Men’s groups; the Doubles, U-21 and ‘C’ Class categories in tournament will be staged this weekend before the other major categories are held on July 4 in tandem with a Veterans’ tournament.
