In refuting media reports that the Golden Grove Primary students started their papers very late at the recent National Grade Four Assessment because the region’s office did not have proper arrangements in place, the Education Ministry issued a statement clarifying the issue yesterday.
The release stated that the 2011 National Grade Four Assessment was conducted at 450 schools across the country, and generally, there were a few hiccups which were dealt with expeditiously.
It was noted that investigations have shown that the chief invigilator neglected to verify the number of scripts on the day prior to the assessment and furthermore, did not turn up at the examination site on the day of the assessment.
However, the case at the Golden Grove Primary School which engaged the attention of the media was a cause for concern for the Education Ministry.
The system that was put in place to avert such incidents was not adhered to. Investigations by the Ministry revealed that the chief invigilator neglected to verify the number of scripts on the day prior to the assessment and furthermore, did not turn up at the examination site on the day of the assessment.
This resulted in a breach of the established rules and guidelines and the said individual has been severely sanctioned by the Education Ministry.
The Ministry will make a concerted effort to ensure that there is no such future recurrence as it strives to ensure that all assessments are conducted under the most ideal conditions.
That aside, the Education Ministry has noted some erroneous statements in the press regarding the assessment at primary schools.
The Ministry wishes to state that at no time any of the pupils were deprived of their full lunch break or any of their scheduled breaks during the assessment.
Further, claims of pupils not having adequate furniture, sitting on the floor and being interrupted by excessive noise at Santa Rose Primary are total fabrications. Students at Santa Rose were adequately prepared for and wrote their assessment under ideal testing conditions.
Previous reports stated that teachers of the Golden Grove Primary School are upset at what they term the “shabby treatment” meted out to students who wrote the National Grade Four assessment examination over the past two days, by the authorities of the Region Four Education Office.
According to reports, on both days of the examination the students at that school started their papers very late because the regional office did not have proper arrangements in place.
Further it was noted that this year the examination was written under different circumstances with invigilators being asked to preside over the sessions.
