Education Officer of Upper Mazaruni in Region 7 Lemmel Thomas speaking with Kaieteur Sport during the staging of the opening round of the Digicel-sponsored Nationwide Schools Football Tournament on Wednesday sought to explain the excitement and impact the Organisers have created merely by inviting the Waramadong Secondary School to participate in the competition.
Thomas, who was present at the GCC Ground to witness the clash between St. Stanislaus College and St. Mary’s said that the decision by Digicel to invite the school has created quite a buzz in the community and has even served to foster cohesiveness among members of the community unlike anything seen before.
He revealed that it was the first time that the school had been invited to participate in football outside the community and the new development has caused parents, volunteers, the Ministry of Education representatives and members of the corporate community to pull together and offer their respective resources to help prepare the team for the historic occasion.
“The invite from Digicel has created quite a stir within the village and the team’s preparation is perhaps the foremost focus right now. We have volunteers who’re prepared to spend their own money, while parents are providing boats and engines at their own expense just to ensure that they get the opportunity to travel to play practice matches as part of their preparations for the upcoming engagement,” Thomas said.
He disclosed that so far the team has played three warm-up matches, winning two and drawing one and confidence is high that they will do well during the competition.
He mentioned that due to the excitement generated from the boys’ involvement in the tournament, the girls are now asking why hasn’t anyone or any member of the business community offered to sponsor a similar event for them.
“This is a challenge for the NGO’s or other business organisations to accept and sponsor a tournament for the girls because they are just as talented within the community,” Thomas pointed out.
He thanked Digicel for reaching out to invite the school, adding that it was a real good gesture that will go a far way in cementing the existing relationship between the Company and the community.
