Residents on the western side of Land of Plenty, on the Essequibo Coast, said they experienced an unusual period of heavy winds, which lasted for about five minutes, yesterday.
The breeze, which was supported by rain, damaged electrical wires in that area. One resident, who is a Justice of Peace, lost his roof which went flying.
Bibi Farida Bagmat, who works as a caretaker for Mr. Anwar Alli, said that she was upstairs attempting to close a window, when she heard a loud sound. Simultaneously Bagmat heard a crash and noticed that zinc sheets attached to Alli’s house were dislocated and scattered in the trench.
The woman said that she was not alarmed by the heavy winds, which lasted for at least five minutes. Alli was in his office at the time. He went out after the squall.
When he returned home he reported that telephone lines had snapped and that Land of Plenty was without electricity, due to the downed power lines.
