Banks DIH yesterday officially opened its waste water treatment facility located at Caribanks Annex, East Bank Demerara.
This facility which has a capital investment of US$900,000 is expected to process waste water for disposal at an aquatic environmentally friendly level to avoid water pollution which is hazardous to marine life and the tourism sector.
According to Clifford Reis, Chairman/Managing Director, the environment is everyone’s concern and Banks DIH has been practising this and it is evident in the lilies that are present in the trenches infront of the company.
The waste water goes through various stages that commence from the collection. It undergoes filtration and other processes until impurities are removed.
Jeremy Faa, Venecar Franchise General Manger, Coca-Cola, stated, “This water treatment plant is a great example of the efforts made today by the dedicated men and women of our bottling partners, who are responsible for implementing so many of our shared plans. Without their contribution, advancing this important work would not be possible.”
Coca-Cola has a system-wide sustainability framework called “Live Positively”. It is built on the commitment to making a positive difference in the world. In the environmental space, the company focuses on water, recycling and managing carbon emissions.
Faa added that water is key to the sustainability and is also an important ingredient in all beverages. It is needed to produce many of the agricultural ingredients. If communities are not sustainable then beverage businesses cannot be sustainable.
President Bharrat Jagdeo noted that water management would be critical in this century and posited that by 2030 some 80 percent of the world’s people will suffer from potable water shortages.
In Guyana the perception is that the country has abundance of fresh water. The Head-of-State emphasised that the biggest users have to be the most concerned and beverage companies utilise 99 percent of water in its production process.
