… New Amsterdam prisons escape
The prison administration is set to reshuffle its senior officers following the recent escape of four inmates from the New Amsterdam Prison, prison sources confirmed yesterday.
The Officer-in-Charge of the New Amsterdam Prison Superintendent Ashton Scott has been placed under close arrest and has been relieved of his command pending investigation into the escape.
Mr. Scott will once again come under scrutiny since investigations were previously carried out on him when he was in charge of the Lusignan Prison. A report was prepared by a Board of Inquiry that was established last year to look into the allegations of misconduct at the Lusignan Prison.
Sources revealed that Superintendent Linden Cornett, who is in charge of Timehri Prison, will be heading to the New Amsterdam Prison, and Assistant Superintendent of Prison Gladwin Samuels who was charged with manslaughter in 2008 following the death of prisoner Edwin Niles is tipped to be transferred to Timehri Prison as officer in charge.
The four escapees who managed to evade the security forces and are said to be heading to Suriname are Kevin Narine called “Long Hair”, 32 years of Number Seven Village, West Berbice; Rickford La Fleur, known as Rickford Williams, 35, of Circle Street, Skeldon, and Vryheid’s Lust Squatting Area, East Coast Demerara; Vijay Seenarine, 33, of Little India, Skeldon, Corentyne; and Vinood Mangru Gopaul.
Narine was serving nine years for robbery under arms and had other matters pending in the court; LaFleur was remanded to prison on two charges of murder and two charges of trafficking in narcotics; Vijay Seenarine; was in jail on a charge of Carnal Knowledge and Gopaul was awaiting trial for murder.
On Sunday, this newspaper had inadvertently listed one of the escapees as Raymond La Fleur. This prompted a slew of comments from relatives of the prisoner who was erroneously stated as missing.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has established a Board of Inquiry to investigate a breach that led to the escape of the four dangerous prisoners.
The Board comprises Major General (retired) Norman Mc Lean MSS- former Chief of Staff – Chairman; Mr. Cecil Kilkenny DSS -former Director of Prisons and Mr. Sheik Asween – Prison Trade Instructor.
Meanwhile, another Board of Inquiry has been established to enquire into the circumstances under which Prison Officer Orlando Jaundoo has been charged for illegally escorting convicted prisoner Krishna Doerga to Nickerie, Suriname on Saturday June 4, 2011.
This Board comprises Seelall Persaud DSM- Assistant Commissioner –Law Enforcement-Chairman; Lt. Col. Malcolm McAndrew , Deputy Director of Prisons; and Mr. Roshan Khan- Member of National Commission on Law and Order (NCLO) Jaundoo and Doerga were both apprehended by the Suriname police and placed in custody.
