Police have detained a senior rank of the New Amsterdam Constabulary as investigations continue into the recent escape of prisoner Krishna Paul Doerga.
Kaieteur News understands that the rank, an Assistant Superintendent, was detained about two days ago and is being questioned at the New Amsterdam Police Station.
According to reports, investigations revealed that the rank transported prison officer Orlando Jaundoo and escapee Krishna Paul Doerga from New Amsterdam to Skeldon.
Kaieteur News was told that the rank has alleged that he was unaware that he was aiding in the prisoner’s escape. Doerga, a 58-year-old businessman who was serving a three-year sentence for fraud, left the New Amsterdam Prison with Jaundoo under the pretext of repairing a sewing machine at the Prison Officers Recreational Hall and Sports club near the penitentiary.
However, the two men ended up at Springlands and then in Nickerie, Suriname where they were captured.
Jaundoo was charged last week Friday for aiding and abetting and was remanded to prison until June 24.
Jaundoo was a Tutor and Literacy Officer at the New Amsterdam Prison. Kaieteur News understands that Doerga, a Surinamese, cannot be extradited because there is no extradition treaty between the two countries
