Delene Thomas, 15, of Wakapoa, should be in school, but due to a prevailing financial crisis currently facing her family, she has had to drop out of school to assist her mother.
There are five other children in the home.
Delene, the eldest has not been going to school for the past three years, ever since her father died, in an accident in the Pomeroon River.
Amelia, the girl’s mother, is unemployed. She said that she usually bakes cassava bread to sell, but there is no market at this time.
The single parent added that after her husband Dennis Thomas’s death, she was supported financially by the Guyana Energy Agency for some time. Over the past ten months she has been receiving public assistance.
“Transportation is expensive and I am not working anywhere. It is really difficult being a woman and having to single-handedly take care of six children.”
Delene, who attended the Wakapoa Secondary, said she would like to attend school again.
