– Fast times continues at National C/ships
Three years ago, when little was known about Rupert Perry, he believed that his time would soon come to set the field alight. If there was any doubt that the time is now, Perry ensured that his life would be etched in the annals of Guyanese sprinters yesterday.
The Guyana Defence Force sprinter, who dropped the fastest time last year with a sub-21 second performance, held off a strong challenge from Police Progressive Youth Club’s athlete, Winston George down the back straight to produce another scintillating run.
Perry had a near perfect start in the race, accelerated on the turn and held his form down the back straight to finish in 21.10 seconds ahead of George, who tried desperately to catch arguably the fastest man in Guyana at moment. George finished in 21.40 seconds while Perry’s team-mate at the Defence Force, Quincy Clarke was third in 21.80 seconds.
“I think I leaned back a little too much, which meant that my abs is stronger than my lower back. I think that is the reason George was allowed to close on me, I leaned back too much, I am going to work on my technique some more,” Perry told Kaieteur Sport.
Perry completed a sprint double to be crowned double national sprint champion after he had won the 100m on Saturday in 10.20 seconds. Perry officially relieved retired national sprinter, Rawle Greene of the double sprint champion title with his 2011 performance.
Chavez Ageday came back after his 200m loss to Stephan James on Saturday to win the 100m U-20 Boys race in 10.80 seconds with Marlon Moshett finishing second in 11.20 and Kiefer Henry third in 11.40 seconds on the final day of the two-day competition.
James also completed a double with his win in the 400m U-20 race. He followed his 200m with a dominant win in 50.50 seconds in the 400m. Bevon Noble was second in 51.90 seconds as Kevin Bayley finished third in 52.40 seconds.
Tiffany Carto ensured that her name was also among the athletes with double sprint titles at the meet yesterday, following her 100m win on day one with a top performance in the U-18 Girls’ 200m. Carto ran a steamy 25.90 seconds to beat rivals, Alita Moore and Shenne Subbattie, who were second and third respectively in 26.70 and 30.70 seconds.
Wayne Harlequin won the Men’s 800m in 1:58.40, edging Cleveland Thomas (1:58.80) in the process. Tyshon Bentick was third with 2:02.10. Thomas had won the 1500m from Bentick and Carlon Halley the day before. Dennis Horatio won the 5000m in 16:46.40 ahead of Jamaul Chisholm and Winston Missigher respectively. (Edison Jefford)
