BV & Anna Regina host successful matches
By Franklin Wilson
The BV and Anna Regina Community Centre Grounds hosted successful GT&T FastBall Awareness games yesterday ahead of the official kick off on July 2 at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground.
With matches already taking place in Georgetown and Linden, it was the East Coast and the Cinderella County time to shine yesterday and shone they did.
At BV, BV Triumph United A team proved that they are aware of the rules and hungry to show what they can do in this new version of the game by notching up two wins, over Mahaica and Riddim Squad.
Riddim Squad won their first game against Golden Stars, while BV Triumph United B team took care of Bakewell Buxton Stars 2-0.
With an appreciative crowd on hand and very eager to get familiar with the rules that governs FastBall, they were treated to some exciting matches. BV A and Riddim Squad, squaring off in the fourth and feature game of the afternoon, went about their job on businesslike fashion.
BV through an 8th minute volley from Romario Welcome took the lead much to the delight of their villagers who came out to lend support.
Riddim Squad ranked higher in the pecking order in Guyana than the home team, quickly drew level from the penalty spot; BV guilty of the throw in violation which meant they allowed the ball to go off on four occasions.
Sceyon Hope was entrusted with the kick and he made no mistake in slotting the ball past goalkeeper Linden Dennis to his left in the 9th minute. One minute later it was Hope again from the penalty spot this time for a foul violation and the result was the same but this time it meant that Riddim Squad had taken the lead.
As Riddim Squad kept the pressure up, they were rewarded with another penalty (foul violation) in the 11th minute but this time, Dennis had the measure of Hope and he saved it. Both teams continued to run down each other with opportunities going by the wayside but it was the home team that would score a strategic goal.
With the Blue Ball in play (final 3 minutes of the game) BV were attacking the northern goal during a period which saw Riddim Squad holding the ascendancy; but the home team absorbed and kept out the visitors and waited for the final minute of play to score a dagger like goal compliments of Ronald Gordon. His goal meant that BV won the game 3-2 to add to their opening 2-1 win against Mahaica; Jumaine Summerset scoring with the blue ball in the 14th minute, Collis Wilson netting for Mahaica in the 26th minute.
Riddim Squad won the first game of the afternoon against Golden Stars 2-0, thanks to goals from Hope in the 11th minute and Jonathan Forde in the 18th.
BV B team, made up of a number of junior players upstaged their more accomplished opponents, Bakewell Buxton Stars 2-0, compliments of a blue ball 15th minute 6 second penalty from Nikel Fraser. Buxton had the opportunity to return the favour from the penalty spot also with the blue ball but the goal was nullified by goalie Devon Wilson.
Up at the Anna Regina Community Centre Ground reports are that the crowd there was very animated and excited about FastBall as were the players.
In the two games played, Richmond hammered Henrietta B 5-0 Wesley Joyce scoring all the goals including blueball strikes in the 12th and 30th minute, the other goal was scored in the 12th.
Henrietta A was victorious by the lone goal of their match-up against Queenstown which came off the boot of Devon Romeo in the 26th minute.
