With law enforcement officers rallying to ensure that all drivers obey the traffic rules and regulations, it seems as if some officers think they are above the law, as yesterday recorded another accident on the Linden/ Soesdyke Highway this time it was caused by a police officer who was said to be heavily under the influence of alcohol.
Reports are that around 15:15 hrs (03:15pm) yesterday, almost five miles away from the Yarrowkabra Police Outpost, a police rank dressed in civilian clothing was operating a relatively new police pick-up (PMM 9609), when he lost control of the vehicle and slammed into the ridge along the public road.
The vehicle then skidded from the impact and landed in the bushes alongside the main roadway.
When passers-by arrived to render assistance to the officer, he was unconscious.
After regaining consciousness he explained that he saw another vehicle on the road coming towards him and he swerved to avoid a collision.
Contrary to that explanation, another driver who was not far behind the police rank’s vehicle said that no other vehicle was approaching from the opposite lane nor was there another vehicle in close proximity of the police vehicle. He also offered that the rank was speeding.
This newspaper also understands that the officer could not locate his firearm after the accident occurred.
A former army officer who was at the scene advised junior police ranks to cordon the area to carry out a search for the weapon, which according to reports was eventually recovered.
