Dear Editor,
Now the Government of Guyana will learn of how the Ministry of Housing came here to Lethem, knew nothing about anything concerning our area, and denied land to a lot of us that are from right here. They gave most of us the swampy area and gave ‘outsiders’ the best. Do you see now what the result is?
My mother, for example, is tired trying to get an application for a piece of land for my brother who is presently studying out of the country. She applied in 1998 when it was still Lands and Survey.
They told her where it was – marked it off and everything. In 2000, the Housing Ministry took over, she went to pay up for the land and they told her she had to reapply – which she did. In 2004 they were back, she again made an attempt to pay, but to her surprise her application form could not be found.
She tried again when they came back to Lethem, only to be informed that because she is married she can’t get a piece of land.
She tried in vain to tell them that it was for her son, and he also wanted to get them out of the flooded area, but was insulted and also ignored. Letters were sent by my Dad all around trying to get help, to no avail.
In 2006 when they came, my mother was there again, and on that occasion, she and my father were sent with one of the officials to survey the land. My father took this gentleman in his own transportation; everything was set, they were even told to start building, which they did.
Now when it was time to pay up (I think last year) they told my mum that they ‘invaded’ and that she will have to pay $700,000. Where on earth will they find that money? She sells her fruits from the land to make a living, and my dad is a taxi driver, with an old taxi… no way they can make that!
Recently when the flood came their house was more than half in water, so they moved to the other that they built, only to find now that they cannot have lights because they don’t have some proof of ownership for the land.
We now had only two weeks to buckle up and try to find documents. Most people in Lethem don’t have land titles because it’s like once or twice a year that the Housing Ministry comes into the area. I am asking the relevant authorities to look into this matter. My parents can’t go back in that swamp to live. Also, concerning the lights, many persons don’t have proof of ownership.
