Bakewell Topp XX, led by a double from Yannick Braithwaite and others from Shackee Charles and Trentoon Lashley ensured they overwhelmed opponents Net Rockers, smashing their way to a 4-0 win and the top prize of $100,000 among others in the Upper Demerara Football Association organised Man-Up Under 23 football championship last Sunday evening at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.
In the battle for third place Milerock edged Vasco 2-1 to collect the $25,000 third prize.
The final began with Net Rockers looking the better side as they put together more crisp passes which was not matched by Topp XX early on. But this did not materialize into goals for the Rockers side and soon Topp XX began to counterattack and this paid dividends after a close opening exchange Topp XX rocked the nets.
A ball down the left side was squared across goal and Braithwaite fired passed a dazed Ryan Rose in the 16th minute.
The second goal for Topp XX came in the 25th minute where Charles off of a pass by defender Cleveland Thomas beat the Rockers goalkeeper with a flat shot for a 2-0 lead.
In the 26th minute Topp XX’s Marcel Jansen brought more excitement to the crowd as he passed to Braithwaite who shot and even though Rose got a hand to the ball, the momentum was enough to give the Topp XX side a 3-0 lead.
The second half did not bring either side early goals but Topp XX were coasting when a foul against one of its strikers allowed for a free kick. Taken on the right side by Trenton Lashley, the shot flew past the fingers of Rose and ended up in the net as he was watching his near post in the 91st minute.
Milerock won their third place playoff game scoring a 2-1 win over Vasco as Ryan Crandon scored both goals for the winners in the 33rd and 75th minutes of play, while Leonard Wilson leveled the scores when he netted in the 49th minute for Vasco.
Saturday night, Topp XX scored a 2-0 win against Milerock to reach the final as Kennard Simon netted in the 20th minute and Marcel Jansen in the 67th minute. In the other semifinal Milerock edged Vasco 4-3 on penalty kicks following a 1-1 stalemate after regulation and extra periods of play.
The presentation of the trophies and prizes will be done today at the Heath and Wellness Centre on Coop-Crescent beginning at 4.00pm.
