Can GPL electrify CASH to retain title?
With three teams already qualified for quarterfinals of the 2011 Inter-Organisation Basketball Championships, five more spots will be up for grabs tonight as progress towards the semi-finals and finals of the tournament continues tonight at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH).
The Media, Son/Son Barber Shop and John Fernandes were the three teams that qualified on the first day, Sunday. Tonight, five of the remaining 24 teams will be looking to join them in the next round, which is a knock-out round for a year’s bragging rights.
Among those teams expected to make the final eight cut, based on their preliminary performance on Sunday are Guyana Geology and Mines, the defending champions, Guyana Power and Light (GPL), Neal and Massy Group, The Teachers and MediCare Pharmacy.
However, based on the qualification of Son/Son Barber Shop and John Fernandes, who were not among the favourites to qualify, but took out reasonably strong units, a place in the next round for those teams named earlier is not 100 percent certain.
The bottom-line is that the remaining 24 teams must play for their place in the next round. As a result, there will be an immense battle of the corporate community as the competition moves to the semis and finals, which are also scheduled to be played tonight.
Head of VP Update, the organisation that is hosting the event, Vijay Panday told Kaieteur Sport that it is important that players and teams arrive early so that patrons are not robbed of what is to be an entertaining night of basketball among the corporate giants.
“I want players to come early so that we can start early. Remember the next day is a working day and this is a tournament for workers. We cannot have them out late at night. So I am asking those participating teams to come early,” Panday pleaded yesterday.
He informed that the tournament will continue at 6:30pm today and if the whistle is blown and the teams are not on the court, ready to play, they will not be allowed to proceed further in the event. He said that the tournament is also about setting standards.
Panday said that none of the teams that submitted a list on Sunday will be allowed additions and subtractions to their list tonight. He indicated that teams should continue to uphold the rules of the tournament so that a fair winner can emerge.
“It’s not done here for these corporations. I hope to develop a League after this tournament for the companies that participated so that they can continue playing and improve for next year, but we are here now and we have to get it right,” Panday told this newspapers.
He said that tickets purchased on Sunday are not valid while there will be two side attractions for patrons. He informed that the finals will not be the 7-minute duration of the preliminary rounds, but a 10-minute per half period for a 20-minute Grande Finale.
