Armed bandits inflicted a severe beating on a 51-year-old GuySuCo supervisor during a raid on his home, but they only managed to escape with a cellular phone.
Krishendat Narine, called ‘Fella’, of 995 New Area, Canje, Berbice, was attacked and robbed by three men – one armed with a handgun, another with a cutlass and the third with an axe – around 02:00 hours yesterday.
Kaieteur News understands that the man was attempting to flee his home when he was confronted by the bandits.
According to reports, Narine resides at the house with his 17-year-old daughter. Reports are that they were both sleeping and were aroused by a noise coming from the front door. Narine got up and placed a living room chair behind the door to prevent the bandits from entering while advising his daughter to run.
The teenager managed to make good her escape but as Narine was coming out from the lower flat, one of the bandits who was armed with a ‘long gun’ fired a round in the air and confronted him.
The bandit took Narine back into the house and placed him upstairs in the living room to lie on his belly, while kicking him several times about the body, demanding jewellery and money.
Narine told the bandits that he did not have any and they demanded his cell phone, which was on a chair close by.
As the men were leaving the premises in apparent anger at not getting what they wanted, one of them pelted Narine with a plate and left him lying face downwards on the floor.
The matter was reported and mere hours later the police arrested two persons who they are almost convinced were a part of the gang that perpetrated the act.
However, an official in Berbice indicated that there is still some more investigative work to be done before charges are instituted.
