Businessman Navindra Ramatedeo, who was involved in a shootout with police ranks two Sundays ago, was released on $300,000 bail when he finally appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore at the Mahaicony Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Ramatedeo, who is being represented by attorney at law, Satesh Kissoon, pleaded not guilty to a charge of discharging a loaded firearm with intent. The shooting stemmed from an incident that left a police constable nursing a gunshot wound to his hand.
Ramatedeo himself was hospitalised under guard with two gunshot wounds and was only discharged last Friday. He remained in police custody until his court appearance.
Kaieteur News understands that the businessman who hails from De Hoop, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, will face further charges including illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The Prosecution is alleging that two Sundays ago Ramatedeo who was under the influence of alcohol discharged four rounds from an illegal 9mm pistol, one of which hit an off duty policeman who was sitting in a motor vehicle.
The policeman’s colleague, who was armed, returned fire hitting Ramatedeo in his neck, chest and shoulder and subsequently managed to disarm him.
At the time of the shooting, the off-duty cops had stopped at Mahaica with the aim of rendering assistance to the occupants of a vehicle that had run off the road. Yesterday, Police Prosecutor Robert Clement objected to bail, citing that there were more charges to follow.
However, Defence Counsel Kissoon argued that Ramatedeo’s medical condition is still not what it should be.
Kissoon told the court that his client, who limped into the court with the assistance of police ranks and who was sweating profusely, was still receiving treatment for a bullet that is still lodged in his body.
The Magistrate took the arguments into consideration and granted the accused his pre-trial liberty.
This newspaper was reliably informed that the businessman had faced arms and ammunition charges a few years ago.
