As the country grapple with the scourge of domestic violence a man as his estranged wife of 14 years ended up before the court on separate charges for assaulting each other.
The man, Khemraj Guirdarie, 35, a carpenter of Angoy’s Avenue and his estranged wife Elizabeth Naidoo, 32, a housewife also of Angoy’s Avenue on Friday appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Roby Benn and pleaded not guilty to the charges of assault causing actual bodily harm, committed on each other on Friday 24 May2011 at Angoy’s Avenue.
Prosecutor Corporal Orin Joseph told the Court that on the day in question, Guirdarie and Naidoo who once shared a common law relationship was involved in a fight, which ended up with both parties, while being armed, allegedly inflicting blows on each other.
Naidoo stated that she lives with her sister and family at another location in Angoy’s Avenue and since she and the accused separated he became angry and has been stalking her.
Her story was that on the day in question she was walking on a dam in the community is search of a Neighbourhood Police when she was accosted by Guirdarie who was armed with a cutlass.
She stated that she ran in a neighbour’s yard and fell in the process during which time the accused followed her and dealt her several broadsides about her body.
The woman stated that her sister saw the commotion and came out with a stick and dealt the accused a lash to his hip and he ran away.
The man in his version stated that he lives with his son and on the said date he was on his way to the shop to buy a bottle of sweet drink, when he was approached by Naidoo and her sister who were armed with sticks. He stated that they started to rain blows on him.
The man stated in his effort to ward off the lashes he grabbed on to Naidoo and they both fell on the ground, but the blows continued. He eventually managed to free himself and got away.
The matter was reported and they were both arrested and charged. The couple was placed on $50,000 each and will have to return to court on 22nd August.
