Egland Stephens, 21, an unemployed man of 8 Savannah Park, New Amsterdam, was on Wednesday placed on $40,000 bail by Magistrate Fabio Azore when he appeared before her at the Whim Magistrate’s Court on a charge of receiving stolen property.
The police reportedly caught Stephens with a DVD player and an amplifier which he claimed he was given to sell by one Jamal Griffith, called “Terror”.
The said items were found to be the property of Faizal Ally of A. Ally and Sons General store, whose storage bond at Vryheid, West Canje was broken into on May 18, and a number of items worth over $5M were stolen.
The case for the prosecution was that on the day in question, about 2:35 hrs, nine armed and masked bandits dressed in dark clothing held up watchman Andre Rollins, called “Bunny” at gunpoint.
They broke into the bond and carried away a quantity of items. The bandits also robbed Rollins of a cell phone and $4,000, before making good their escape.
A report was raised and after intense investigation the police arrested Stephens who was found with the items. He later told Police that one “Terror”, who is still at large, had given it to him to sell.
The case has been transferred to the New Amsterdam Magistrate court for June 13 as investigation continues.
