As the sun sets on his visit, some baubles from Bill. *Big kick to the Guyana Press Corpse. Corpse it is, especially them Sports reporters. They need to open their eyes and ears.
Bill has breakfasted for the past five days in his Georgetown lair with a West Indian/World cricketing legend, none other than Clive Lloyd, the most successful captain in Caribbean cricketing history. A name in these parts and plenty more.
Clive has not been exactly hiding. Bill has partied with him on at least two nights. Plenty others at the functions too.
But did the Guyhacks spot him and seek his views on the state of West Indian cricket
(dire..), the current team (variable..) or even the price of bora (high Bill hears..)
Did they hell! Bill even told a couple that CL was in town and where he was. The others just needed to open their eyes.
Journalism is about putting yourself about, meeting people, being nosey and searching for stories not turning up at the Peg-a-Suss (late) for a free meal and two hours with the Donald.
Nought out of ten to the Press pack. *Higher marks for NCN and their coverage of the flag raising. It was good. Sometimes very good. Bill had the impression the director had actually seen the rehearsals and planned his/her coverage to suit. The shots made sense and told the story.
Mainly, Bill loved the crane shot but some of the cameras were rather soft and not properly colour-balanced. Ruined the rest of it. But good show NCN!
By the by, if the BBC exists to compensate for ‘market failure’ in the UK, then only NCN covering the Independence celebrations makes the case here.
*Incidentally who is Bharrat’s new barber? Shaved to the bone. BJ now looks like a night-club bouncer now! Scary for a Head of State.
Who writes the prolix speeches and who edits them. Nobody, the latter Bill fears. This one at the flag-raising was three times as long as it should have been.
Get a grip, Bharrat! History awaits you.
*Finally a big hi five to Bill’s mates who have got baubles in the National Awards–too many to announce in the National Park at Flag Raising apparently. Lame excuse. Treble vodkas all round to Bonnie, Carl, .David, Freida, Capt Gerry, Elizabeth H, My Paloma blanca, Ameena, and others I am too polite to mention.
Gongs Away! Kicks and Kisses. The difference between the two is never that big. Keep looking…for both.
