The preliminary inquiry (PI) into the treason case involving Major Bruce Munroe, his wife Carol-Ann, and reserve officer Leonard Wharton, continued yesterday before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Treason is a capital offence which is not bailable.
Defence counsel Nigel Hughes, Gregory Gaskin and George Thomas were all present at yesterday’s proceedings, as Director of Public Prosecutions, Shalimar Ali-Hack, who is prosecuting in the case continued the examination of chief witness, Quincy Critchlow.
Critchlow was the only person to give testimony yesterday and he was on the stand for approximately one hour.
At the end of yesterday’s hearing the matter was fixed for continuation on June 7.
Throughout the hearing yesterday, Critchlow stood in the witness box and avoid making eye contact with any of the three accused.
Wharton, a reservist in the Guyana Defence Force; Munroe, a serving major in the army and his wife Carol-Ann, were on December 27, last, arrested and charged with conspiracy for treason.
Between December 1 and December 16, 2010, the three accused allegedly plotted to level war within Guyana to force the President out of office in order to compel the government to change its measures. The trio first appeared in court on December 28, last.
