– rescued by passerby
On her way home to Brazil on Sunday, last, around 17:30hrs (5:30pm) while driving through the Lethem access road, Amanda Garnette made a startling discovery – a baby boy lying on the roadway, wrapped in a towel and clad in short pants.
Reports are that Garnette was driving her vehicle around the ‘round-about’ near the access road, returning to neighbouring Brazil after taking her children to swim, when she observed the towel from a distance.
While passing slowly, she noticed that something was wrapped inside. Garnette stopped and upon exiting her vehicle, she unwrapped the towel and saw a tiny baby boy with his eyes closed. She thought that the infant was dead but when she lifted him up, the child opened his eyes.
Kaieteur News understands that the baby was totally wet – since it had rained heavily on the said day – and was covered in filth also. Garnette, a mother of two, immediately took the baby to the Lethem Police Station where a report was made and ranks accompanied the woman with the child to the Lethem Hospital.
According to a source, the baby is of Amerindian ancestry, weighed 3.8 kilograms, and appears to be around three weeks old.
Garnette decided to name the baby “Angel” with reference being made to the infant surviving the heavy rains and still being healthy. She has been constantly visiting the child who is currently at the Lethem Hospital and wishes to adopt him.
The woman ‘fell in love with the baby’ and already purchased a number of items which was sent to the hospital to ensure that the infant was well taken care of until she could possibly claim the child legally.
Garnette is hoping that the Welfare Department will allow her to adopt the child and is willing to “fight at all costs to legally obtain this miracle baby”.
