Top player Gibran Hussein Safraz of Corriverton, Berbice defeated Number two seed Richard Bacchus in the final to continue his winning ways in the Table Tennis circle in Berbice. The occasion was the Top 16 Independence Table Tennis tournament which was successfully organized by the steering Committee of the Berbice Table Tennis Association in collaboration with the Guyana Table Tennis Association and played Thursday Independence Day at the University of Guyana, Tain Berbice campus.
After a hard fought day of action, Safraz and Bacchus emerged as the last men standing as they contended the finals. Safraz ‘the one arm Wonder’ kept his composure to emerge winner 3-0 in three hard fought games 12-10, 14-12-11-9 to take the Republic Bank, New Amsterdam Branch trophy and cash incentive.
Earlier in semifinal play, Safraz had defeated Sherwin Sahadeo (3-1) 9-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-9, while Bacchus had won 3-2 in a hard fought tussle with Floyd Conway. The scores were 6-11, 11-7, 15-13, 11-9 and11-8.
In the third place play off Conway had to pull out all the stops to eek past Sahadeo 3-2 winning 11-2, 7-11, 11-8, 6-11 and 11-5. In the quarterfinal rounds Safraz had won from Briton Murray 3-0, Sahadeo had defeated Brentnol Richards3-1, Conway got the better of Omraj Singh3-1 and Bacchus won from Julian Haniff 3-0. The other two top placers were also presented with trophies compliments of Republic Bank, New Amsterdam Branch and cash incentives. Fourth place received a medal and cash incentive. In the consolation play for the first round losers, Jermaine Charles emerged winner with victory over Jamal Butts 2-1 in the final, while Ryan Anderson with a 2-1 victory over Joshua Lalbachan, came out third. The Fair Play award was presented to Veteran Player Brentnol Richards.
Meanwhile, the top finishers in the recently held Berbice schools Table Tennis Tournament 2011 which was sponsor by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture and the National Sports Commission held during the month of April at the Berbice High School were presented with their trophies. The recipients were in the 21 years and under category; 1st Ian Bagot, 2nd Ryan Anderson, 3rd Luen David
The boy 18 years and under results were; 1st Bryton Murray, 2nd Denison Mentore, 3rd Joshua Lalbachan
Boys 15 years and under saw 1st Joshua Lalbachan, 2nd Bryton Murray, 3rd Julian Haniff
Girls 15 years and under top placers were 1st Anita Alleyne, 2nd Joylyn Conway and 3rd Christine Surujpaul
Boys 13 years and under was won by Jordan Conway with Joshua Butts and Shaquan Spencer finishing in the top three
In the U10 category all the participants were Boys 10 years and under 1st Trevon Hintzen, 2nd Troy Munroe 3rd Gabrion Ramsarran
Girls 10 years and under top placers were 1st Emily Ramsuchit and second Simanda DeCunha
The fair play pr4ize was presented to Joshua Seepersaud Director of The University of Guyana Berbice campus professor Dizal Samad, Commandant of the Felix Austin Police Training School, Superintendent Ian Amsterdam, Sports Enthusiast Eli Hazel and Floyd Conway were among those that addressed the participants at the conclusion of the tournament and helped with the distribution of the prizes.
