Nostalgia is not what it used to be. Bill has been round the Guytelly track a few times and over a few years and is given to occasional melancholy and wondering what happened to some old friends. Just where are they now?
‘Uncle Freddie’ Sanchara ran a little TV academy at Channel Four in Queenstown in his front room. He had a bevy of talent. Nazim Hussain went to GTV, lost his way a bit and is now at NAPS doing good work. Neaz Subhan went to Sharma, the PNC benches in Parliament, over to GTV and ‘Guyana Today’ and is now the Head of GINA-in charge of pumping out the Government message.
Reaz, Bill hears, is still ‘pon television but on the Chicken Noodle Station which Bill rarely ‘catches’ as you Guyanese say. Freddie’s academy has done him proud.
What about Tony Vieira TV, the TV man’s school of excellence in Quamina Street-‘The Evening News’? Bill spent a few years trying to professionalise them and get them away from the idée fixe (like Animal Farm) that PNC=right, PPP=wrong. Always. Some of them were almost ideological in their conviction. As they say in diplomacy, Bill had ‘firm and frank’ discussions with them. Heated even. They think me a Jagdeo stooge. Vivian Williams, the editor, was a smart cookie; so smart he gone to practise law in the USA.
Michael Gordon could then hear no good of the Government, now I see he is walking on the other side of the street. Jennifer Ganesh is doing good work at NAPS, Roy Babel has apparently gone to the USA after an accident with a PNC election poster. He was on it. Zaheer Abass is well being Zaheer Ab-ass and living in a dream world. But whatever happened to Paul McAdam–the man with a direct line to Congress Place?
Bill hears title tattle that he is now working on promoting mangroves for ,er, Robert Persaud and the Government. The other side of the street is obviously greener for him too.
Is Sahadeo Bates the only one left holding the flame for the Palm?
But what of others–where is the lovely Andrea Teekasingh or Michelle Elphage–so close to being a First Lady or Natasha Waldron or Ajay Baksh or Esther Sookraj? None still on Guytelly.
Bill will go to the Guyana Media Friends Reunited site to see if I can track down a very efficient operator in Moses Nagamootoo’s Government Information Service back in 1993. Her name? Julia Johnson. Where is she now?
Funny world the media. One day you are in, then out, then in again. Memories….
Pip!Pip!
