…Commander launches probe
An employee of Rose Hall Estate is claiming that he was badly beaten and manhandled by two members of the Community Policing Group (CPG) in Canefield, East Canje.
Glen McCloud, 45, of 930 New Area, Canefield Settlement said that while leaving a show shortly before midnight last Wednesday at the Canje Welfare Ground, he noticed an opening in a section of the zinc fence on the outside of the ground.
He said that he took a peek through the opening and was immediately apprehended by two ranks, attached to the ‘B’ Division CPG.
McCloud said that the ranks accused him of trying to gain entry into the ground through the opening in the fence.
He said that he even showed them the exit stamp that the officials put on his hands after he left the ground but the ranks did not believe him.
“(One of them) say he ain’t concern. He put on the handcuff and put me in front [of the vehicle]. He turn and tell (the other one) to ‘put on the f*&ing handcuff on the man’. When (name given) put on the handcuff, the other one gave me one push and I fall down on the ground. When I fall down on the ground, the second one started kicking me. One of them come and he sit down on top me. All I tried to do was hide me face from all the cuff,” Mc Cloud said.
All of this happened, he said, on the Canefield Public Road. “I turn on me face. He [name given) sit down on me back now. He start bouncing me head on the road”, the man stated.
He said the ordeal lasted about 20 minutes after which the police patrol vehicle came. “He (name given) was still sitting on me and all I could recall the guys (other patrol members) telling he ‘get off the man, get off the man’. I was pleading with them to take the handcuff off me. The handcuffs sink in me hand,” he said.
At the Reliance Police Station, the CPG ranks told the Corporal that Mc Cloud hit them. Mc Cloud asked for evidence of him beating them. The Corporal then ordered them to take the handcuffs off. Shortly after, he was released.
Mc Cloud said that he was ordered to have a medical taken from the New Amsterdam Hospital. He collected the medical report and did some x-rays. It was revealed that he sustained a fractured nose. He had to see the nose and eye specialist at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
Mc Cloud took the matter to ‘B’ Division Commander, Stephen Merai and has since been told that Merai has ordered a full investigation into the matter.
The man said that while he is satisfied with the manner in which Merai is dealing with the matter, he suspects that there will be some ‘foot- dragging’.
“I feel like foot dragging on this matter just to let my wounds heal up. This matter has to go to court; the Magistrate won’t see my wounds,” Mc Cloud added.
Mc Cloud said that these same CPG ranks have been involved in other cases of alleged brutality in the past.
“I am not the first person who this man beat up. He is the beat man in the patrol,” he said.
