Nurse Midwife Elizabeth Austin, 37, of Lot 1 Sandvoort Village, West Canje, Berbice, was on Monday fined $10,000 or an alternative of 20 days imprisonment by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo when she appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court, and pleaded guilty to a charge of disorderly behaviour. Austin was also charged with threatening behaviour to which she pleaded not guilty.
According to prosecutor Corporal Orin Joseph, on Wednesday May 16, the woman allegedly went to the home of Roseline Fernandes at Lot 42 Stanleytown, and brandishing a knife, accused the woman of having an affair with her husband, Paulton Austin.
The prosecutor said the accused, who had the knife concealed in her handbag, threatened to kill Fernandes. The other woman had to quickly exit the house and made her way to the Central Police Station where a report was made.
Apparently not satisfied, Austin sought out her husband Paulton, a hire car driver, who was in the vicinity of the Georgetown/ New Amsterdam car park, at Strand, New Amsterdam.
An argument then ensued between the couple during which time the woman started to use a series of expletives. The woman again brandished the knife and her husband received a slight gash. The woman, whose ranting and raving occurred just a stone throw from the Central Police Station, was subsequently arrested and charged with the two offences.
Prosecutor Joseph informed the Court that the defendant was previously on a one-year bond, which expires on January 2012. Her next court date was set for August 12, 2011.
