A 41-year-old mother of six was yesterday sentenced to eight years imprisonment for stabbing her husband to death.
Jean La Cruz was charged back in 2006, for the murder of her husband Sankar Ramsingh. Madame Justice Dawn Gregory handed down the sentence yesterday.
Prosecutors Rhondel Weever and Teshanna James represented the state. La Cruz was represented by defence lawyer Peter Hugh.
Yesterday as the jury came back from deliberations, they were asked if La Cruz was guilty of murder.
The foreman reported that they found her not guilty of murder, but guilty of the lesser count of manslaughter.
At this point La Cruz’s lawyer began to address the court. According to the lawyer his client was incarcerated for the last five years. He addressed the fact that La Cruz was in prison for five years already and the court should take that into consideration.
Hugh also urged the court to consider a lesser sentence, so that when she is released she could still make a meaningful contribution to society.
The judge said that the evidence during the trial showed that there was a history of violence.
She then sentenced La Cruz to eight years and she was whisked away by prison officials yesterday.
