Following closely on the heels of the men’s First Division Competition, the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) sets off its John Fernandes Insurance Services Ltd Second Division League tomorrow with a double header, at the GCC and DCC grounds.
In the fixtures: serious contenders Allstars take on 2009 champs Hikers at DCC from 16:45 hrs, while GCC hosts Old Fort from the same time.
With a revamped side comprising mostly of former national players, the Allstars, led by Dexter Wyles, Timothy Jonas and Damon Woodroffe are expected to give strong opposition to a Hikers side which has been enjoying some measure of success recently. The youthful Hikers will be spearheaded by Colonel ‘Scooby Doo’ Heywood, Reon Brandford and Shaquille Assanah and will feature many of the top junior players in the country.
The GCC versus Old Fort matchup is a highly anticipated duel with the latter led by Dwayne Alleyne and he will be supported by promising juniors Richard Heyliger and Kevin Melville, but they are expected to have their hands full against a powerful GCC side led by Shad Fernandes, Shaka Gill and the Xavier brothers Andrew, Michael and Steven.
The tournament also features an under-21 men’s selection and the Airbenders comprising ladies currently selected to train on the women’s national squad.
After an absence of the tournament in 2010, the second division teams are eager to get on the field again and the tournament is likely to be a competitive one with several sides showing sufficient quality to challenge for the trophy.
The tournament will feature two full rounds of hockey with the winner being decided on a point system basis.
Matches will continue on Thursday 26th May and the tournament is expected to run until August.
