– Cops still awaiting advice from DPP
It has been almost two weeks since police began investigating allegations that a teen from Linden was sexually molested by her father and brother. The police are still awaiting advice from the Director of Public Prosecution.
But many are of the opinion that nothing will come of the matter since time is being ‘wasted’. Persons who are familiar with the incident are also saying that with the implementation of the new Sexual Offences Act one would think that more predators would have been placed before the courts.
Kaieteur News understands that the 46-year-old man and his 18-year-old son were taken into custody some time last week after reports were made to the police.
Police and sources within the Welfare Department of the Human Services Ministry said that medical examinations appeared to support the teen victim’s allegations.
The victim, whose mother is dead, allegedly told police that her brother began to sexually molest her last year. After the molestation continued, she complained to her father who instead of looking into the matter and reprimanding her brother, started on her too.
One report indicated that the sordid story came to light on Tuesday after an anonymous caller reported the matter to the Probation and Family Welfare Unit in Linden.
But other sources said that the teenager confided in a friend, and revealed that she was contemplating running away from home.
After the police were called in the girl was taken to the Linden Hospital Complex, where she was examined, and it was confirmed that she was sexually active.
Subsequently, the father and son were arrested.
Up to press time yesterday a welfare official disclosed that the victim was still in the care of another relative.
Meanwhile, in recent times Officials from the Child Protection Agency when asked about certain cases, continue to insist that there is a limit to their work.
“We can investigate and relate what we find to the police; we can remove an abused child from the environment but that is as far as we can go…it’s up to the police to institute charges.”
In addition, the Child Protection Agency has been overwhelmed with cases of sexual abuse which is becoming more rampant.
Only Friday a young mother had reported that under the Old Sexual Offence Act a man who molested her then three-year old daughter was never charged. The woman claimed that she was bluntly told by the police that nothing can be done since the child could not offer evidence in the court.
