The Pomeroon Women’s Agro Processors Association (PWAPA) will be representing Guyana at a Regional Contest for Rural Innovative Projects in Barbados this June.
The local women’s group was selected as one of five finalists from 10 countries that entered the regional contest highlighting rural innovative projects.
The Ministry of Agriculture under its Agriculture Diversification Programme entered the group into the contest and in November 2010 PWAPA submitted its concept paper and application form.
The group was informed of its success during a meeting with the Agriculture Minister, Robert Persaud on Tuesday.
The Minister noted that the Ministry will support the group in preparation for the contest with Technical Officers coordinating with PWAPA to ensure their success.
Thelma Bess, Vice-President of PWAPA stated that planning has begun and the group will be demonstrating the manufactory line of virgin coconut oil in Guyana through photographs. The possibility of having a model or live demonstration of the production process would be considered, Bess stated.
The contest is being hosted by the Caribbean Regional Unit for Technical Assistance (CARUTA). In addition to a financial award for the further development of the group’s work, winners of the competition would be given the opportunity to share experiences in implementing the project to stakeholders.
The theme of the first competition is micro-enterprise development, income generating activity and innovation. Focus is being placed on youth rural enterprises, micro-credit, and innovation and transformation of agriculture.
The Pomeroon Women’s Agro Processors Association was established in 2002. The group is involved in the production and packaging of pepper sauce, fruit mix, achar, virgin coconut oil, seasoning salt and green seasoning.
