Alpha face Linden All Stars on Friday
Guyana’s ‘Golden Jaguars’ will play the visiting Barbados National team two Friendly International matches this Friday and Sunday.
The Guyana Football Federation had initially said that the two nations would have been facing off on Sunday only but another game has now agreed to by the countries with the first set for the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground on Friday evening kicking off at 20:00hrs.
Alpha United, preparing for the semifinals of the Caribbean Football Union Club Champions Cup will engage a Linden All Stars line-up in a practice game from 18:00hrs also on Friday at the MSC Ground.
Both Guyana and Barbados are preparing for upcoming International engagements and in the case of the Guyanese, the Olympic (Under-23) Qualifying competition; the Guyanese are drawn in Group C along with the Dominican Republic, Aruba and Cuba.
The preliminary Group Stage of this tournament, which also features Groups A, B and D, is set for June 21 – 29 or July 19 – 27. The winner of each group advances to the Final Group stage November 21 – 29.
The Technical Committee of the Guyana Football Federation named a predominantly young team to take on the Bajans opting to give the younger players exposure ahead of selecting the Olympic Squad.
England based Christopher Bourne is expected to arrive in Guyana today to join the squad as will the Trinidad and Tobago based trio of Akel Clarke, Colin Nelson and Vurlon Mills.
A number of other senior players named would not be able to make it since the dates for the games are not FIFA dates.
Additionally, since Alpha United will be playing the CFU tournament next week, more senior players in their line-up will not be able to play on Friday and Sunday which gives others players who have been knocking on the door the opportunity to stake their claim on the National team.
Training for the squad began on the weekend and continues daily under the watchful eyes of National Coach Collie Hercules assisted by Jimmy Mc Lean and Andrew Hazel (goalkeeper).
