Navin Arjune, 27, called “Poodle”, of Sheet Anchor Village, East Canje, was on Friday sentenced to three years in jail by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo when he appeared before her at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court and pleaded guilty to the charge of robbery under arms.
On Friday April 15, he robbed Bibi Goulamudeen of Sheet Anchor Village, East Canje, Berbice.
Vekanand Doodnauth, called ‘Boy’, 24, also of Sheet Anchor who was charged along with Arjune, was remanded to prison after he pleaded not guilty to the same charge.
According to prosecutor Corporal Sherlock King, the woman lives at Fort Ordnance Housing scheme with her family.
He said that between 9:30 hours and 10:00 hrs on the day in question while the woman was alone at home the two men, in company of others and armed with knives, entered her house and stuck her up before robbing her of a quantity of gold jewelry.
The men, who were masked, then made good their escape.
The matter was reported and the two men were arrested and charged.
Arjune admitted to the crime and gave a detailed description of what took place. He said that three of them committed the crime, including Doodnauth, and one “Buddy”, who is still on the run.
