The Guyana Youth and Students Movement, the youth arm of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) yesterday staged a youth convention, which attracted scores from all 10 Administrative Regions.
The event which was three-fold commenced with an interactive session at Congress Place following a march to Roxanne Burnham Garden for the youth rally.
Education, employment and empowerment are issues affecting youths, the party’s Presidential Candidate, Brigadier (ret’d) David Granger, stated.
During the interactive session other factors affecting family life were raised but Granger strongly feels that Guyana’s education system needs reforming to meet the demands of society.
Teachers are the most important elements in the delivery of education and to fix the woes in the system they need better packages that will encourage them to stay in Guyana. Other aspects that need improving are the Cyril Potter College of Education and the physical infrastructure of many learning institutions, Granger indicated.
He stressed that many of the schools in rural areas and even the University of Guyana have not benefited fully from Government’s expenditure. Reference was made to the fact that Guyana’s highest tertiary facility was closed owing to unsanitary conditions.
Unemployment and underemployment may be corrected through the improvement of the education system, the Presidential hopeful noted.
He further stated that the economy needs expansion and the introduction of more science subjects in schools will see the creation of new jobs. “The education system has to be made appropriate to the young people,” Granger stated.
Empowering youths is essential for their growth and development. The group interactions enlightened youths of their responsibility towards the nation to vote at the General Elections.
