A 26-year-old grass cutter was yesterday fined $75,000 after being arraigned on the charge of damage of property.
It is alleged that on May 12, last, at ‘B’ Field Sophia, Jason Herbert caused damage amounting to $118.000, the property of Herme Munroe.
The defendant, who is a Sophia resident, pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry before whom he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Police Prosecutor Venetta Pindar said that the virtual complainant and the defendant are neighbours. On the day in question, the virtual complainant was laughing at the defendant who then went into a clump of bushes, armed himself with solid objects, and pelted Munroe’s property.
When the accused was questioned by the Magistrate as to why he operated in such a manner, he stated that he was provoked and aggravated.
Herbert, who the court was told has never had any trouble with the law, was given the option of paying the fine of $75,000 within two weeks or face six months imprisonment. He may opt to pay the fine.
