The relatives of 12 year-old Shemroy Anthony are calling on the police for a thorough investigation following the death of their son mere days after he was beaten by another lad from his community.
Reports are that the lad was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital on Tuesday last around 10:00 hours. The lad’s mother, Cheryl Anthony, of Queen Street, South Cummingsburg, told this publication that on May 2, last, her son and his ‘friend’ were involved in a fight.
According to Mrs. Anthony some time after lunch that day her son returned home complaining of severe abdominal pains as well as headaches. When she enquired, the woman said that her son related that he was involved in a scuffle with an 11-year-old.
“He tell me that he and de boy de fighting and he fall down and a man turn and tell de other boy how come you tekking all that and de other boy pick up a piece of wood and start lashing he (Shemroy) in he head and in de belly.”
The woman said that the following day her son remained in bed, which was unusual, and started complaining of severe headaches and stomach pains. However, on Wednesday, after the lad developed a fever his parents decided to take him to the Georgetown Public Hospital. The doctor at the hospital, according to the lad’s parent, failed to conduct an x-ray. They simply administer some Panadol and sent him away.
The medication did not help as the fever continued on Saturday the lad was returned to the hospital and the same medication was repeated.
“This boy just keep staying in de bed and he start talking out he head, and this fever continue.”
On Tuesday the child’s mother said that she decided to return to the hospital but this time to the Out Patient Department as opposed to the Emergency Room which she was visiting all the time.
“After the Doctor checked him he asked if the doctor at Emergency did any x-ray and we said no so they sent us to do some test and an x-ray.”
However the child’s condition worsened and it appeared as if the child had fell unconscious on Tuesday.
“When we reach at the hospital on Tuesday they had he on a stretcher and couple minutes later they come out and tell me that he dead.”
Now that the lad has died his relatives are saying that they are now getting information about how serious was the fight between her son and the other lad.
“Now that people hear he dead they coming and telling we how the little boy got a sound trashing with a piece of wood while he was lying helpless on the ground.”
The woman said that the ‘fight’ was witnessed and instigated by several grown ups who were cheering each on.
A report has since been made at the Brickdam Police Station and an investigations has been launched.
A post mortem is expected to be performed on the child’s remains on Monday. It is not clear if the other lad has been detained.
