– Providence, Guyana: The first day of the first match of the Digicel Test Series will always be a memorable one for young Raymond Peter Perez of Guyana who had the opportunity to join in the coin toss with West Indies and Pakistan Captains Darren Sammy and Misbah-ul-Haq at the Guyana National Stadium.
The 11-year old is an avid cricket fan who has been playing the game since the age of four, and his dream is to be a part of the West Indies team when he grows up. In his pursuit of this objective, Perez has found a very unique way of practicing and improving his game.
“I taught my pet dog Diamond a few cricket tricks so he could help me,” said Perez. “I practice bowling by bowling to Diamond. He catches the ball and brings it back to me. Then I taught him how to bowl the ball to me so that I can practice my batting.”
This very innovative young man is a member of the Georgetown Cricket Club, and is currently competing in the Under 15 cricket competition. A student at the New Guyana School, Perez is awaiting the results of the Common Entrance Examinations which will determine the high school he will ultimately attend.
“I have never done anything like this before,” said Perez. “I sang the Guyana National Anthem last year for the World T20 held here but this is the first time I’m actually meeting the players. This is very exciting.”
When he’s not playing cricket or practicing cricket with Diamond, Perez can be found cycling, another sport in which he is interested.
“Digicel really enjoys being able to bring youngsters such as Raymond closer to the game and to give them the opportunity to meet international cricketers such as Sammy and Misbah-ul-Haq,” said Gregory Dean, CEO, Digicel Guyana. “It is truly special when our Regional Sponsorships can have this effect in our local communities. We are sure that Raymond will long remember his experience today and we hope by meeting these players it will serve as an inspiration to him.”
