A scuffle between an armed policeman and a man who attempted to escape from custody resulted in a 34-year-old bystander being shot.
Dwayne Dodson is nursing a gunshot wound to his left side after being hit by a bullet from the policeman’s .38 service revolver around 20:40 hours on Monday.
The incident occurred in the Stabroek Market area in the vicinity of the police mobile outpost.
Police in a statement said that their investigations have revealed that an armed Police Constable, who was on duty at the Mobile Outpost at Stabroek Market Square, had arrested a man following a report of an alleged assault made against him by a female.
The man was placed in custody at the outpost, but while arrangements were being made to have him taken to the Brickdam Police Station, he ran out of the Mobile Outpost in an attempt to escape.
However, he was recaptured after being pursued by the Police Constable and public-spirited persons.
According to the police, at Longden Street, while being taken back to the Mobile Outpost, the suspect attacked the police constable and attempted to take away his firearm.
A struggle ensued between the suspect and the police rank during which a round was discharged which struck Dwayne Dodson.
Dodson was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he has been admitted for medical attention.
The suspect in the assault matter is in police custody.
