…Prisoner begged magistrate for something to work into this one
Two men who were previously partners in crime and were recently involved in a fracas at the New Amsterdam prison resulting in one bursting the other’s head, have both pleaded guilty to a charge of robbery under arms, on Friday at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court when they appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo.
The men, Chris Rampersaud, who claims to be a taxi driver, and Desmond Isaacs, 22, of no fixed place of abode were accused of Robbery committed Sunday September 12, 2010 on Edward Taylor at Alexander Street in New Amsterdam.
Taylor was robbed of one gold chain; one cell phone and $30,000 cash after the men jumped over a fence and accosted the unsuspecting man. They dealt him several lashes about his body and head after he resisted before relieving him of his belongings and making good their escape.
The men were subsequently arrested and placed in custody. They had both pleaded not guilty.
In court Isaacs maintained his not guilty plea. Rampersaud, when it was his turn, changed his plea to guilty.
He told the magistrate that he is innocent of the crime, but that he is presently serving a two-year sentence and would like “a small thing to work into this one”.
The magistrate then told him that she would enter a not guilty plea for him to which he stated that he would stay with the guilty plea, but that he was still begging for “a small thing”.
Upon hearing that, Issacs also decided to change his plea to guilty, stating that he is wasting time on remand in jail.
Rampersaud had eluded capture and was sentenced in his absence on another matter. He was later arrested in Georgetown. During his sentence he told the court that he was not aware that he had to attend court since he was away working in the city.
Isaacs had injured Rampersaud during a fight between the two at the New Amsterdam prison.
The fracas occurred during the unlocking period in which the prisoners are allowed time to do house cleaning. It was reported that Isaacs accosted his one time buddy and wounded him on the head with a piece of iron.
During the melee, prison officer Tony Lewis rushed to part the fight and was injured on the left arm.
The two injured men were taken to the New Amsterdam hospital where they were treated and sent away. The police are investigating.
They will have to return to court May 20 for sentencing.
