As Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United FC continues preparations for their Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Qualifying Tournament for the 2010-2011 CONCACAF Champion’s League finals, President of the club, Odinga Lumumba is confident that his boys will cross the hurdle and go on to procure top honours later on.
Lumumba spoke with the media at a press conference convened to announce his presidential bid for the top post in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) later this month.
At the moment Alpha FC is awaiting the outcome of the match between Walking Boys FC of Suriname and Highlander FC of Puerto Rico to determine their next opponents.
Guyana Super League champions, Alpha United have joined Digicel T&T Pro League champions, Trinidad Defence Force for the semifinal round after edging River Plate of Puerto Rico 3-2 in its second-leg match following a 0-0 first-leg draw.
They have qualified for the semifinal round while Trinidad Defence Force, the 1985 and 1987 winners reached the last four after it trounced Guyana’s Milerock 4-0 and 3-0 respectively over two-legs to complete 7-0 aggregate win.
In the remaining quarterfinal ties, Haitian champions Tempete will hold a 1-0 lead when it hosts T&T’s Caledonia AIA on Saturday in St Marc, while defending CFU Club champions, Puerto Rico Islanders come up against Suriname’s Walking Boys. The first-leg is set for Saturday in Suriname with the return-leg set for Puerto Rico, a week later. The two semifinal winners and third placed club will qualify for the 2011-2012 Concacaf Champions League.
Guyana will be hosting the semifinal legs at the National Stadium later this month.
