Max Masters ‘B’ XI trounced North Essequibo to book a semifinal spot when the Regal Stationery & Computer Centre male over 35 20/20 & female open 10/10 softball cricket tournament continued over the past weekend.
North Essequibo won the toss and elected to bat, notching up a challenging 177-9 in 20 overs. Skipper of that team, Laxmikant Narine retained his rich vein of form, lashing a workmanlike 66(3×6; 3×4). He received support from Seon Morris (41) in a partnership of 58 from as many balls thus ensuring that North Essequibo had a fighting chance.
Anelwu Azore was the best bowler for Max Masters “B” XI and after conceding 12 runs in his first over, returned to pull things back with 18 runs from 4 overs.
He also took 3 wickets which included the prize scalp of Narine and was supported by skipper Talesh Ramotar (2-24 in his 4 overs).
Max Masters “B” XI started their reply on a positive note but Satish Manohar (3-26) checked their progress after snaring 4 quick wickets. Fazal Ally (58) and Rudolph Johnson (24) offered some resistance with a partnership of 58 off 44 balls which took them closer to their target. Four more wickets fell in quick succession and brought some uneasiness to the Max Masters “B” camp.
The anxiety eventually proved unwarranted as Patrick Samaroo batted sensibly and took his team across the line. The winning team will now await the results of other quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, Regal XI has played unbeaten so far in the competition and will clash with Linden All Stars XI at Bayrock ground in their next match. Mortimer Denny had turned in a majestic performance and given Regal X1 a scare in the last tournament. He would be back in the impending match.
In other matches, Rangers XI the West Demerara champions will do battle with Brush XI at the Leonora Primary School Ground, while the West Demerara side faces Brush XI at the Leonora Primary School Ground. Both teams possess some of the most exciting players. Rangers XI would be fielding the likes of Sanath La Channa, Asif Ahamad, Rambharose Beharry, Leonard Harprashad and former inter county player Asgarally Nazarally, while Mohamed Saffie would lead the bowling attack. Brush XI will also have a balanced bowling and batting side.
In another match over the coming weekend, Max Masters “A” XI will clash with D’Edward SC the Berbice champions, in Georgetown.
There will also be matches in the female category when Marshon XI battle Linden champion team, Ituni Warriors at the Bayrock Ground. Berbice champions, Heavenly Angels, will clash with Mahaica Princesses in West Berbice.
Next Weekend, Sunrise Females will also be in action against Mahaica Queens in Georgetown, while Cottonfield Females of Essequibo will take on Monar Institute, the West Coast champions. This is a quarterfinals match slated for the West Coast Demerara and will round off the quarter round. Meanwhile, the Guyana Softball League (GSL) recently presented Sonia O’Selmo with a cheque to support her efforts in the upcoming windball cricket competition in Barbados.
The GSL would like to express its gratitude to several business entities that supported the windball player including Regal Stationery and Computer Center, Universal Solutions and Mahendra Ramkellewan.
The young player acknowledged the support and assured her sponsors that the support would go a far long way in furthering her career.
