The management of the state-owned Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) has called in police after auditors uncovered a significant fraud, to the tune of millions of dollars in its Personnel Department.
Kaieteur News was told that the Corporation’s Audit Department uncovered suspicious activities last week and after reporting it to management, the Personnel Department clerk was hauled in for questioning.
While rumors had tagged the figures at some $22 million, GuySuCo now believes that amount may be up to $4M but checks are still ongoing. It is believed that the fraud was carried out for over a year.
The staffer has offered to repay, a senior GuySuCo official said yesterday.
Kaieteur News was told that the clerk was charged with processing Leave Passage Allowances for workers of that sugar company.
The allowance could be used to pay for mortgages or even home construction.
Kaieteur News was told that over time, the clerk requisitioned a number of cheques and made them payable to specific contractors. However, internal auditors were alerted to a number of discrepancies and raised the issue with the Personnel Department.
“She has asked to repay the amount. However, she took sick leave and GuySuCo has asked the police to also investigate the matter,” an official who declined to be named said yesterday.
The female staffer was said to have been transferred from the LBI estate to the Ogle headquarters of GuySuCo since 2008. The official yesterday denied that the clerk has disappeared and said that GuySuCo was in contact with her up to Thursday.
