A source said that the employees would make the deposit every night at the Citizen’s Bank branch.
This has raised speculation that they were trailed or ambushed by persons who were aware of the nightly transaction.
Kaieteur News understands that Mohamed and Fordyce left the Two Brother Gas Station at Eccles, East Bank Demerara around 20:00 hrs, with money from the day’s sales in their possession.
They then headed for Mandela Avenue.
A police official said that the employees were about to exit the car when a man, who was standing at the northern side of Mandela Avenue came over to the car.
The man, who was carrying a handgun, ordered the employees out of the vehicle and then opened fire.
The bandit then dragged the wounded men out of the car. He then fled east along Mandela Avenue in the stolen car, with the money.
Police said that they received reports that the gunman entered another vehicle after parking the stolen car in West Ruimveldt.
One security guard said that he heard the gunshots and then saw Mohamed and Fordyce lying on the roadside.
Another guard said that he saw one man lying on the roadside and another man clutching the groin.
Police rushed the wounded men to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Police have had to deal with several similar attacks in recent weeks.
Two weeks ago, a police sergeant was shot by gunmen who had snatched $2M from a cambio dealer’s wife near Avenue of the Republic.
Then a few days ago, gunmen killed businessman Bedi Ramjewan in Crown Dam, Industry, East Coast Demerara shortly after he had left a commercial bank in the city.
