– investigators eyeing ‘insiders’
Authorities have launched a major investigation after an alert employee discovered a ‘channa bomb’ Thursday night in a restricted area at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA).
While the airport assured that the device did not immediately “pose any safety or security risk to the facility or passengers and staff facilities”, officials said that the incident is being viewed as “extremely” serious and investigators are working round the clock to find the person (s) responsible.
Minister of Transport, Robeson Benn; CJIA’s Chief Executive Officer, Ramesh Ghir; and other senior security officials were at the airport yesterday to ascertain the implications.
Kaieteur News was also told that Benn was at the airport late Thursday night following the discovery and did not leave until early yesterday morning.
According to police sources, the discovery was made shortly after 21:00 hrs Thursday night by a Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) officer.
The vodka bottle was filled with channa and gasoline and found near a sink in the washroom.
‘Channa bombs’ when lit and thrown are known to cause substantial damage.
Investigators from the Bomb Squad of the police were also on the scene.
Both Benn and Ghir were alerted to the find.
According to a CJIA statement issued by the government news agency, an alert airport staffer discovered a bottle containing what appeared to be suspicious contents.
“The said bottle was subsequently removed from the premises by members of the Guyana Police Force who are currently pursuing investigations.”
The airport assured that the location and condition of the receptacle did not pose any safety or security risk to the facility or to passengers and staff.
“Management of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport along with members of the Guyana Police Force and other Law Enforcement Agencies are maintaining the comprehensive level of safety and security surveillance at the airport.”
According to a source close to the probe, investigators are centering their investigation on staffers and a cleaning crew working that night shift because the area is a restricted one and can only be accessed by authorized personnel.
The cleaning crew is said to be contracted to the airport.
While the CJIA press release did not give many details yesterday, other official sources insisted that investigators strongly believed that the presence of the bottle with suspicious contents was done “internally”.
