Defending National Female Cricket champions Rose Hall Town Metro defeated Tucber Park by 165 runs to take a one nil lead in the Millie Lewis Memorial cricket tournament at the Area ‘H’ Ground last weekend.
Batting first after losing the toss, Rose Hall Town Metro were given a 25 run opening stand between Jacqueline Singh and national opener Melanie Henry before West Indies pacer Subrina Munroe bowled Henry for 7.
Singh and the experienced Natasha Gangoo then added 23 for the 2nd wicket before Gangoo was bowled by another West Indies female bowler Tremayne Smartt for 15. West Indies player and national Captain Shemaine Campbelle joined Singh and took the score to 96 for 3 before Singh was run out for a well played 30 (3×4).
Useful contributions from Campbelle 42 (4×4, 1×6), Erva Giddings 16, Trishanna Cort and Tessa Park 11 enabled the home team to reach a formidable 209 all out in 35.2 of their allotted 40 overs. Bowling for Tucber Park, Subrina Munroe claimed 4 for 38 runs and Tremayne Smartt 2 for 40.
In reply, Tucber Park had no answer to the pace and spin bowling combination of the Rose Hall Town Metro Team and found themselves in early trouble.
West Indies pacer Erva Giddings bowled Condolence Richmond for 0 and they never recovered being eventually dismissed for a paltry 44 in 20.4 overs; extras leading the way with 16. Tremayne Smartt 10, Katana Mentore 8 and Steffi Rodney 6 were the only other batters to offer any resistance as 13 year-old off spinner Phaffiana Millington took 3-10 runs, Campbelle 2 for 7 and Nikita Toney 2 for 3.
The two teams will clash again on Saturday at a venue in New Amsterdam and another victory would give the Berbice Championship to the Rose Hall Town Metro Team.
The tournament is organised by the Berbice Cricket Board and sponsored by Peter Lewis of Associated Construction Service. The winner of the three match tournament would be crowned female Cricket Champion of Berbice.
